Coconut oil

Continuing the case against the "fat is bad" idea, Karina Francois, naturopath and author of Clean Food, Clear Thinking, says coconut oil speeds up your metabolism and increases energy.

"It contains medium chain triglycerides that are easily absorbed by the body and are quickly metabolised as fuel in the liver, rather than stored as fat," she explains. "A spoonful of coconut oil is also great to counter sugar cravings – it's more satiating than lollies, so you will feel fuller for longer, and your energy levels won't crash after a short period like they do when you have processed sugar."

According to Francois, coconut oil is also good for immunity.

"Choose virgin coconut oil, which is extracted from fresh or dry coconuts, because it is less refined, has more antioxidants than the alternatives, and has no additives," she explains.

"Avoid hydrogenated or liquid forms of coconut oil. It's great to use as an alternative to other cooking oils for stirfries or roast vegetables – I love mine drizzled over sweet potato roasted in the oven."
